Caria was the name given to the lands of present-day Muğla and its surroundings between the 11th and 6th centuries BC. The Ionians and Dorians lived in this region for many years, leaving behind dozens of historical artifacts and a rich cultural heritage. The Carian Trail is a hiking trail, 850 kilometers long, that passes through this ancient region, traversing historical riches and natural beauties.
The Carian Trail was opened to nature lovers in 2013. The route consists of four main sections: Bozburun Peninsula, Datça Peninsula, Gökova Bay, and Inner Caria, plus an additional section covering the Muğla surroundings.
The first section of the route is located on the Bozburun Peninsula. Bozburun is a quiet peninsula south of Marmaris with a population of 20,000. It is famous for gulet (traditional Turkish sailing boat) manufacturing, as it possesses sheltered bays with natural harbors that offer favorable conditions for gulet production. The areas along the route are mountainous, partly forested, and partly rocky due to the steep slopes rising from the bays.
The Datça Peninsula stretches long and narrow from east to west. Apart from the town center of Datça, you won't find any other concentrated settlements on the peninsula. Much of Datça consists of protected scrubland and forests. Mountain goats are everywhere, accompanied by endemic plants. Untouched beaches and coves, far from settlements, are among Datça's abundant natural assets.
The Datça Peninsula lies south of the Gulf of Gökova, while the Bodrum Peninsula is located to the north. To the east lies Akyaka, one of Turkey's 18 Cittaslow (Slow Cities). This section of the Carian Trail begins in Akyaka. The trail passes through forested paths, climbs mountains, and crosses valleys. The trail introduces you to many untouched and little-known coves.
The Inner Carian section of the Carian Trail runs along the shores of Lake Bafa, once part of the Aegean Sea, and the foothills of Mount Latmos. The final section of the route starts in Akyaka, proceeding along forest paths and village roads towards the city center of Muğla.
